Abstract

Post-treatment with cysteine reduced seedling injury caused by gamma radiation of sorghum seed. The effects of cysteine were most pronounced in primary root elongation. A nearly three-fold increase in primary root length was observed when irradiated seed were treated with cysteine 9 months post-irradiation. Similar but less dramatic effects were observed for coleoptile length and 7 day seedling height. The effects of cystein in reducing injury were independent of radiation levels tested
