Abstract

The results of tests in experimental plots at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi in 1968-72 confirmed general observations that the early sown crop of sorghum escapes serious damage by Contarinia sorghicola (Coq.) whereas the late sown crop usually suffers heavy loss. Sudden fluctuations in the midge populations were found to result either from continuous drought (with consequent low humidity before and during the sorghum flowering period) or from heavy rainfall during the peak of midge incidence; since both of these weather conditions were unfavourable to C. sorghicola, their occurrence sometimes protected late-sown crops from heavy midge damage. The results of the experiments indicated that the most favourable conditions for infestation were a mean temperature of 25-30 deg C and a relative humidity above 60%
