Abstract

For up to 28 days Sprague-Dawley rats were given a diet based on BR64 sorghum, which is high in tannins, untreated or with the tannins removed by extraction, without or with 0.2% L-methionine or 0.255% methionine hydroxy analogue (MHA). In a digestibility experiment rats were given diets based on BR64 sorghum or on RS671 sorghum which is low in tannins. In further experiments White Mountain chicks from a day old were given similar diets. Rats given extracted BR64 had greater weight gain and feed efficiency than those given untreated grain. Protein and energy digestibility values were significantly less for rats on BR64 sorghum than for rats given extracted BR64 or RS671 sorghum. Supplements of methionine or MHA did not alleviate the detrimental effects of tannins in the diet of rats, but growth and feed efficiency of chicks were significantly improved by similar supplements. The magnitude of the response to methionine was greater with BR64 sorghum than with RS671
