Abstract
Bullock finishing treatments with grazing on pasture only and supplements of maize or grain sorghum as energy sources in yards or in conjunction with winter annual rye pasture were compared. In 2 successive years 45 yearling crossbred bullocks were fed for 98 or 107 days. Average daily gains were greatest for bullocks given maize or grain sorghum in yards, intermediate with grains on pasture and lowest on pasture only. Except for dressing percentage, carcass characteristics for bullocks given maize or sorghum in yards were similar to each other, but differed from those of the 3 pasture groups. Economic returns were highest with maize in yards and lowest with grain sorghum in yards while the return for cattle on pasture without supplement was about 30% greater than for those on pasture with supplement of sorghum and double that for those on pasture with maize. The results of the economic analysis depend on the nature of the facilities available
