Abstract
Nigerian yellow maize (C(Nig)), sorghum and solvent-extracted groundnut meal (PNM) were compared with Canadian maize (C(Can)) and solvent-extracted Canadian soya bean meal (SBM). They were used in diets of equal energy value, each with 20, 16 or 12% protein, given to 84 Sprague-Dawley rats in 21 groups of 4 for 4 weeks. Crude protein, crude fat, DM and ash percentages were estimated on 8 other rats killed before the start of the experiment. In the 4th week, 3-day digestion and retention studies for energy and N were made on all male rats. There was little difference in the protein and amino acid content of the 3 sources of energy, but sorghum had slightly less crude fat than either kind of maize. Overall gains of all rats were fairly low; feed conversion efficiency was poorer on PNM than on SBM. Supplementation of C(Can) and PNM diets with methionine and lysine did not significantly affect feed intake, gain, or conversion efficiency. There were significant interactions between protein and energy sources. SBM gave the best gain when sorghum supplied the energy, followed by C(Nig) and C(Can). With PNM, the reverse was the case. Protein level did not significantly affect 4-week average liveweight gains, but rats on the 12% protein diets ate more than those on 16 or 20%. Daily N retention was positively related to dietary protein content. The pattern of gain and efficiency of feed conversion obtained when dry bodyweight was used differed from that noted for liveweight and empty bodyweight comparison
