Abstract
In an attempt to study the physiological basis of yield variation in 20 foxtail millet genotypes, field experiment were carried out in randomized block design with three replications at Main Agricultural Research Station, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad during kharif for two years. Plant height, number of tillers per plant, LAI, LAD at post an thesis period and TDM at harvest varied significantly among the genotypes. Photosynthetic rate, total chlorophyll content and NRase at flowering also varied significantly. High yielding genotypes SIA -2642, PSC-4, SIA -2607 and TNAU-186 had higher plant height(187.7, 180.5, 178.0 and 175.5 cm, respectively), number of tillers (7.61, 7.58, 7.57 and 7.08, respectively), LAI (8.55, 8.41, 8.53 and 8.26, respectively), LAD (86.9, 86.4, 85.5 and 82.6 days, respectively) photosynthetic rate (21.2, 18.8, 19.0 and 17.4 μ mol/m2/s, respectively) and TDM (3616.0, 3517.0, 3629.5 and 3546.0 g/m2, respectively) with higher H.I. (27.0, 25.5, 24.7 and 22.5%, respectively). Plant height, photosynthetic rate and number of tillers were found to have positive correlation with TDM and grain yield. Hence, these parameters can be considered as major determinants of grain yield in foxtail millet.
