Abstract

In 6 legumes (berseem, cowpea, Cyamopsis tetragonoloba, lucerne, Trigonella foenum-graecum and Melilotus alba) and 7 non-legumes (pearl millet, sorghum, maize, oats, Pennisetum pedicellatum, Sudan grass and teosinte) cut before, during and after flowering, av. silica contents were 1.20 and 2.31%, resp. Regression equations in which variables were in vitro DM digestibility, CP, neutral detergent fibre, lignin and silica showed that 1 unit of silica depressed digestibility by 1.4 units in non-legumes and 0.6 units in legumes
