Abstract

Composition and digestibility in vitro were estimated in 264 samples of 6 legume and 7 grass forages each at 3 stages of maturity. The table shows pooled values for the separate stages of each group. Legumes had less DM, neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre, cellulose, hemicellulose and silica than grasses, and more crude protein and lignin. Digestibility of DM was greater in legumes, and declined less with maturity. Digestibility of cell walls was greater in the grasses
