Abstract
In 1969 and '70, sorghum cv. MP Chari was given a basal application of 60 kg N/ha and 0, 13.1 or 26.2 kg P/ha and 0, 30 or 60 kg N/ha after the 1st, 2nd or 3rd cuts of fodder. Production function analysis indicated that under irrigated conditions max. economic response of green fodder yield/kg applied fertilizer was 198 kg for N and 433 kg for P at applications of 35.91 kg N (above basal application) + 24.09 kg P/ha. Max. agronomic response to fertilizer application was 160 kg green fodder/kg N and 361 kg green fodder/kg P. Mean returns at the most profitable levels were Rs3.19/Rs in N, and Rs2.62/Rs in P under a given set of price conditions, indicating that summer-sown sorghum may provide useful forage in a dairy enterprise
