Abstract

16 weeks after sowing in recent alluvial soil, the DM yields of sorghum hybrid Sudax SX-6 were 36.8 g/plant with irrigation and 28.2 g/plant without irrigation. Except for the dead matter component, which was significantly higher without irrigation, all yield components were similar with and without irrigation. Under irrigation, leaf lamina and sheath components decreased from 96% at week 6 to 21% at week 16 and stem tissues increased from 4% to 71%. Stem elongation in weeks 8-13 was rapid, averaging 5 cm/day with irrigation. The final total DM percentage was 31% and N content of each plant component was similar in both treatments. It is suggested that, in spite of their relatively low CP content at maturity, forage sorghum hybrids may be a valuable source of summer forage in New Zealand because of their high growth rates and yields, even without irrigation
