Abstract
In double-cropping experiments in 1970-4, direct drilling and conventional ploughing were compared for the establishment of soyabeans or sorghum after wheat. Comparable yields were obtained in years when weather conditions were favourable for the use of herbicides, but in years with high rainfall after seedling emergence yields were about 30% lower for soyabeans and 15% lower for sorghum after direct drilling. This indicated that sorghum could be a more competitive 2nd crop than soybeans. Direct drilling at between-row spacings of 19 or 38 in had variable effects on yield, but in the case of soyabeans there was a tendency for increased yields at the narrow spacing
