Abstract

4 sorghum hybrids and the local cv. Sea Green were compared in terms of yield and associated characters when sown in rows 10 m long and 70 cm apart at 10-12 cm between plants within the rows. In a 2nd experiment, 5 hybrids and Sea Green were compared at 67 000, 80 000, 95 000 or 127 000 plants/ha. Grain yields were low in all hybrids in the 1st experiment, the highest being 2.06 t/ha in the F1 (ms CK407 X MP1). Grain yield/ha was positively correlated with grain yield/plant and grain yield/plant was positively correlated with seed number/panicle. In the 2nd experiment, significant cultivar X population interactions were noted for numbers of panicles/plant and grains/panicle and for seed weight
