Abstract

In field trials in 1973-4, applications of 37.5, 75.0 or 112.5 kg N/ha were applied at (a) sowing or (b) in a 1:2 split ratio at sowing and at 30 days later to maize cv. PC 1401 and sorghum cv. Early Hegary. In the high- and low-N treatments grain yields of maize were 1.6 and 0.87 t/ha and N contents of the ear leaf at 60 days after sowing were 1.62 and 1.26% respectively. Treatment (b) increased the mean yield for N treatments by 406 kg/ha compared with (a). Similar results were also obtained with sorghum, where yields of 2.65 and 1.70 t grain/ha were obtained with high-and low-N treatments, respectively
