Abstract

Twenty released varieties of chickpea with two advance lines were evaluated under irrigated and moisture stress condition to study the drought tolerance during Rabi 2006-07. It revealed that an advance genotype, Phule G 00108 maintained highest seed yield level under irrigated (2400 kg/ha) as well as moisture stress condition (1541 kg/ha). The other culture Phule G 96006 (2339 & 1506 kg/ha) and varieties viz. Vijay (2368 & 1483 kg/ha) and Vishal (2385 & 1357 kg/ha) also recorded higher yields under irrigated as well as moisture stress condition, respectively. Eventhough, the variety JG 130 (1333 kg/ha) had low seed yield, it was coupled with low per cent reduction for seed yield due to stress (27.79%), high DTE (72.21%), low DSI (0.742), highest RLWC (59.25%) and low membrane injury index (0.224). Annigeri 1 was another landrace showed minimum reduction for seed yield due to stress (22.42%), highest DTE and minimum DSI (0.599). Phule G 00108 (18.12%), Phule G 96006 (18.13%) and K 850 (20.39%) showed minimum reduction while, JG 11 (56.03%) and KVR 108 (48.71%) showed maximum reduction for dry matter production due to moisture stress. The varieties, SAKI 9516 (19.01 g/plant), Virat (18.42 g/plant) and JG 315 (16.08 g/plant) recorded highest total dry matter production and it's partitioning in component plant parts. On the basis of relative sensitivity for different traits, the genotypes, JG 130, Phule G 96006 and Phule G 00108 were found to be tolerant to moisture stress and therefore recommended for their use in breeding programme. The varieties, KVR 108, JG 11 and JG 315 were highly sensitive to moisture stress
