Abstract

Thirty chickpea genotypes were investigated for protein content and genetic divergence based on seed protein profile using SDS-PAGE. Protein content of kabuli type was relatively higher than desi type. Prote in content in 30 chickpea genotypes ranged from 19.98 to 25.23 percent. Kabuli genotype gave some unique band in comparison to desi genotype of chickpea. Highest number of protein band was found in IPCK 00112 (13) & IPCK 2003–56 (13) followed by ICCV 05–308 and GNG 754 (12) whereas minimum number of protein band was found in PDG 8410 (7). It is clear from the results obtained that the chickpea genotype had highest number of protein bands having highest quantity of protein. Maximum bands were of medium molecular weight followed by highest molecular weight and low molecular weight bands. Electrophoresis of seed storage proteins can economically be used to assess genetic variation and relation in genotypes. Thus, specific bands of seed storage protein profile may be used as markers for identification of the mutants/genotypes.The research results about the biochemical characteris tics of desi chickpea varieties are expected to provide guideline s for the researchers confronted with the need to use such typical food seeds in India as well as in the rest of the world.
