Abstract
At Lusitu in an area characterized by high temperatures, low and often poorly-distributed rainfall, low infiltration rates and high evapotranspiration rates, maize, sorghum and millet [Pennisetum americanum] were sown in 1968-70 following (a) traditional seedbed preparation to a fine tilth on the flat, (b) as (a) but with soil lumps <15 cm not broken down, (c) as (a) but with progressive ridging and tie-ridging after crop emergence, or (d) ridging, tied every 2 m, before the start of the rains, with the crop sown on the ridge. Yields were higher with (d) than with the other methods; average grain yields of the 3 crops were 168, 159 and 17% higher with (d) than with (a) in 1968, '69 and '70, respectively
