Abstract

Twelve male-sterile lines of Pennisetum typhoides [P. americanum] were crossed with 12 pollinators in a line X tester manner. The parents, F1 hybrids and a control were grown in six environments created by combinations of site, planting date and fertilizer application. Variability for yield, 500-grain weight and number of days to first ear emergence (DFE) was higher in the male-sterile lines than in the pollinators. Dominance variance predominated. Nonadditive gene action was recorded for yield and DFE. Among the male-sterile lines, good general combining ability (GCA) was shown by five for grain yield, five for 500-grain weight and four for DFE. Among the pollinators, four showed good GCA for yield, three for 500-grain weight and one for DFE. No line or pollinator showed good GCA for all three characters. In general, cross combinations showing high specific combining ability effects included at least one form with good GCA, suggesting epistatic gene action
