Abstract
Of two sectorial tetraploids obtained after colchicine treatment of seedlings of the outbred diploid Pennisetum typhoides [P. americanum] 'IP1475', only one yielded seed (the C1 generation). Three tetraploid C1 plants were selfed and C2 and C3 plants were selected for high or low seed set with selfing. Meiosis was also examined. Variation in seed set was observed between samples not differing in meiotic features. A high frequency of univalents and trivalents was the main cause of sterility. There was evidence of a genotypic influence on chiasma distribution. Plants not differing in chiasma frequency did differ in chromosome association frequencies
