Abstract
In India, matze, sorghum and millets provide the main stable food for the vast multitude of its population. Although they have been traditionally grown for centuries these crops did not make any impact on the agricultural economy of the country until the advent of hybrids and high-yielding varieties of crops in the early 1960's. The yields per hectare of these three crops have remained almost static over the years. Experiments at research stations as also on cultivators' fields have, however, shown that by using high-yielding varieties and proper management practices, it is possible to obtain yields several times higher than the national average
