Abstract

In controlled-environment studies with 3 bloom (surface wax) and 4 bloomless sorghum lines, net CO2 exchange (NCE) rates measured on the 3rd leaf at 14 days after sowing did not differ significantly between lines, but transpiration (T) rates averaged about 1 mg H2O/dm min less in bloom lines than in bloomless lines. Both NCE and T rates were significantly higher in bloomless lines than in bloom lines when leaf 5 or 6 was measured on day 23. Mean NCE and T rates in bloomless lines were 18 and 26% higher, respectively, than in bloom lines. It was concluded that bloom and associated cuticle characteristics acted as a barrier and modified gas exchange properties
