Abstract
7 grain sorghum cv. of various plant types were grown at 120 000, 200 000 or 280 000 plants/ha and rates of apparent photosynthesis and dark respiration measured. Photosynthesis rates varied significantly with plant density among cv., decreasing with increase in plant density in cv. Cosor 2, Cosor 3 and EG-3 and increasing in cv. Darso, IS 8544, IS 295 and to a lesser extent in CS 36. The medium-short cv. EG-3 with narrow erect leaves had the highest photosynthesis rate, while the tall cv. IS 295 with long wide and drooping leaves had the lowest rate. Data are given on photosynthesis rates of the cv. grown under different light intensities for each density, the rates of photosynthesis and dark respiration and of grain yield of the cv. and correlations between respiration and photosynthesis or between grain yield and photosynthesis or respiration. These correlations were significant. It is suggested that either one or a contribution of both of the 2 physiological processes would serve as a good measure of the yield potential of grain sorghum cv. CO2 assimilation rate could be increased considerably by increasing the plant density
