Abstract
During 1973-1976 the Pennisetum americanum composite populations Delhi (DC) and Vijay (VC) were used to compare response to selection by the full-sib family method from biparental material and reciprocal recurrent selection (RRS). Selection was based on mean grain yield/plant. Yield increased by about 23% in DC and 21% in VC in one cycle of RRS, while with full-sib selection improvement was slower. Additive, dominance and genotype X environmental variances were determined for seven characters in each population. The coefficient of variation as a result of RRS was reduced in DC, while it was comparable with that of the base population in VC. Correlation studies indicated that the magnitudes of favourable correlations of different characters with grain yield were higher with RRS than with full-sib selection. The negative correlation between plant height and yield in both improved populations indicated that unfavourable gene combinations can be broken through selection by either method
