Abstract
In trials with sorghum cv. N.J. 156 given 0, 40, 80, 120, 160 or 200 kg N and 0, 40 or 80 kg P2O5/ha, increases in rates of applied N were accompanied by linear increases in percentage of lodged plants from 11 to 95. Heavy lodging on plots given high N rates was ascribed to weak stem structure, and was indicated by fast growth rate and slow rate of DM accumulation in stems, weak standing power as measured by plant height, heavy ear weight and poor root anchorage resulting, probably, from excessive shading produced by a marked increase in LAI. The P fertilization had little effect on lodging.
