Abstract

C. spp. were isolated regularly from feeds composed of mixed seeds, and further investigation showed that almost all the cryptococci were from milo seeds. Immersion in commercial sodium chlorate completely eliminated the yeasts, indicating that they occur either in or on the seed coats. Attempts to find their exact location were unsuccessful. C. albidus was the predominant sp. in the bird feed, although C. laurentii was the most common sp. in standing milo before harvesting. These findings suggest that at least part of the contamination occurs during storage
