Abstract
VFA, lactic-acid and ethanol production was determined in ensiled high-moisture (63% DM) grain of sorghum cv. H610. There was a high proportion of butyric and acetic acids and traces of formic and isobutyric acids. Ethanol production was high, but starch and soluble carbohydrate content decreased during ensilage. Proteolysis was not extensive. Possible pathways of carbohydrate utilization by the microflora are presented. It is suggested that butyric-acid producing bacteria play a considerable role during the ensiling of high-moisture sorghum grain and the need to maintain anaerobic conditions is stressed
