Abstract

Fresh green jowar [Sorghum vulgare] in Nagpur, Maharashtra, had, in DM, crude protein 5.76, ether extract 1.93, crude fibre 34.11, N-free extract 48.43, ash 9.77, Ca 0.28 and P 0.18%. In DM of silage and hay of the same crop crude protein was 4.68 and 4.46, ether extract 1.94 and 1.77, crude fibre 86.04 and 38.56, N-free extract 46.48 and 45.06, ash 10.86 and 10.15, Ca 0.25 and 0.23 and P 0.16 and 0.14%. The fodders were given to 4 adult Sahiwal bullocks of 400 kg liveweight for 29 days with collection of excreta during the last 8 days. The cattle also got 500 g groundnut cake daily. Average daily intake of DM was 1.86, 1.80 and 1.20 [kg]/100 kg liveweight. Digestibilities of crude protein in green feed, silage and hay were 33.4, 25.1 and 30.1%, of fibre they were 64.6, 67.0 and 63.1% and of N-free extract 54.3, 53.3 and 52.9%, giving digestible crude protein 1.92, 1.17 and 1.34 and total digestible nutrients 52.75, 52.47 and 50.77% in DM
