Abstract

Data on irrigation responses and interaction of irrigation and fertilizer effects from 9,872 crop-cutting experiments on wheat, maize, jowar and gram conducted from 1963-64 to 1960-70 in IADP districts were collated to estimate yardsticks of additional yield due to fertilizer application under rainfed and irrigated conditions. Wide fluctuations were found in additional yield due to irrigation from crop to crop, district to district for the same crop and from year to year for a crop in the same district. The additional yield due to irrigation of wheat varied from 0.8 to 4.3 quintals per hectare. The main yardstick in terms of kg. of additional grain per kg. of plant nutrients N + P2O5 + K2O for wheat were 11.6 and 9.8 under irrigated and rainfed conditions respectively. For maize, jowar and gram, these values were 10.5, 5.5, 7.4 respectively under irrigated conditions and 11.7, 6.3 and 6.5 under rainfed conditions respectively.
