Abstract

The occurrence of Sesamia cretica Led. and Chilo partellus (Swinh.) in the Northern Province of the Sudan [cf. RAE/A 60, 4640] was investigated in 1966-70 with the aid of light-traps for adults and by examining stems of maize, sorghum and other plants for larvae. It was found, from samples of larvae taken at five places situated along a north-south line through the province, that C. partellus predominated in the south and S. cretica in the north. In April-July, when no plants were present in the field, few adults were taken, and it was assumed that the insects survived on maize and sorghum grown as fodder crops on the bank of the river. The numbers of adults increased after July and reached a peak in September-October. In 1966, the number of larvae and pupae reached a peak of 181/100 maize plants at one site in November, following the peak in adult numbers. In 1968-69, heavy rainfall in July caused mortality of larvae, and the total catch of adults was 604, as compared with 4129 in 1967-68 and 2825 in 1969-70, when July rainfall was lower. The rainfall in August, total rainfall and temperature in July-August seemed to have no effect on numbers. Maize was preferred by both species to sorghum. On maize, the highest infestation occurred on summer sowings and the lowest on winter ones, and the application of nitrogenous fertiliser increased infestation. Of three varieties tested, one was more susceptible than the others
