Abstract

IN the continuous search for higher yields in agricultural crops, considerable emphasis has come to be placed on the effective absorption and utilization of sunlight by plant populations throughout their growing period. The importance of plant type in selecting for nitrogen responsiveness and effective utilization of solar energy has recently been pointed out in rice (Beachell, 1966; Guevarra and Chiang, 1965), wheat (Asana, 1965), maize (Williams, Loomis and Lepley, 1965), gram (Rohewal, Ramanujam and Mehra, 1966), etc. Little information of this type is, however, available on fodder crops. It was, therefore, felt desirable to collect some information on the kinds of plant types met within such crops. The preliminary information obtained on sorghum is presented below.
