Abstract
Experiments were conducted in Urambo district in Tabora for three years. Objectives were to determine the optimum groundnut densities in maize-groundnut intercrop, determine the optimum economic return for maize/groundnut intercrop and to assess farmer’s preferences for intercropping combinations. A randomized complete block design was used. Plot size was 10 x 10 m. The harvested area was six central rows. There were five treatments:- Maize + groundnuts (90x30 cm, two seeds, double rows), Maize + groundnuts (90x40 cm, two seeds, double rows), Maize , 44444 plants/ha, Maize + groundnuts (90x20 cm, two seeds, double rows), and Groundnuts (90x20 cm, two seeds, double rows, mono). The spacing used for maize was 0.9x0.5m (two plants per hill). Yield advantage was assessed by using land equivalent ratios and monetary values. Maize yields for the first season differed significantly (P<0.001) between maize + groundnut (90x20 cm) and other treatments. On monetary values, Maize + groundnuts (90x30cm, two seeds, double rows), had the highest net benefits. Land equivalent ratios (LER) for all seasons were higher than 1 in the intercrops. Farmers assessment showed that sole maize and sole groundnut were highly socially acceptable. The spacing of 90x30cm, two seeds, double rows was third, but was the first for intercrops. Based on yield performance, economic returns and farmers’ assessments, maize + groundnuts (90x30cm, two seeds, double rows) were recommended as the best maize/groundnut land use combinations.
