Abstract

The following is taken from the authors' abstract. Following the widespread damage to grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) by a new biotype of Schizaphis grami-num (Rond.) in North America in the summer of 1968 [cf. RAE A 59 624, etc.], field tests were carried out in the Texas Southern High Plains and the Oklahoma Panhandle in 1968-69 to determine whether compounds currently used against the aphid on wheat could be used against the new biotype. Conventional emulsion sprays of disulfoton, parathion, diazinon or demeton, ultra-low-volume sprays of malathion, and aerial broadcasts of granular disulfoton had the best insecti-cidal properties and were the least phytotoxic; emulsion sprays of carbopheno-thion, although somewhat slower in action, were also usually very effective. Similar sprays of methidathion (Supracide), though not effective in 1968, significantly reduced the aphid population in 1969. Most of the 16 insecticides tested gave reductions also in populations of Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch), but they had no significant effect on the numbers of Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) or flea-beetles. In general, the more effective the insecticide in controlling the aphid, the greater its suppressive effect on populations of beneficial insects, which included Hippodamia convergens (Guér.) and various parasitic Hymenoptera. However, emulsion sprays of demeton at 0.5 lb toxicant per acre gave satisfactory aphid control and had little effect on beneficial insects
