Abstract

In trials at 7 sites in the Zaria area, the effects of improved practices (improved cv., seed treatment with fungicides, uniform spacing and plant density and application of NP fertilizer) on traditional crop mixtures were compared with traditional practices. The mixtures were (a) groundnuts intercropped with sorghum and millet [Pennisetum typhoides [Pennisetum glaucum]]and (b) millet intercropped with sorghum, and the improved practices were those recommended for the individual crops in monoculture. In (a) groundnut yields were increased 43% and in (b) grain yields of sorghum and millet were increased 47 and 17%, respectively, by improved practices, cereal yields were not affected in (a). ACT.
