Abstract
The effects of cotton-jowar and cotton-jowar-groundnut rotations maintained for 22 years on a clay soil were studied. Application of farmyard manure at 6 t/ha, and the presence of cotton in the rotation increased the soil organic matter content. Groundnut in rotation increased soil NO3-N but not total-N. The increase in water-stable aggregates (0.25 mm) is attributed to organic matter accumulation. Application of superphosphate did not improve aggregation. Cation exchange capacity was linearly related to organic matter. Jowar yields were increased by NO3-N, but cotton yields were not related to NO3-N.
