Abstract
Field-scale gravimetric studies on the moisture-extraction pattern at Sholapur in 1970-1 and 1971-2 showed that sorghum cv. M 35-1 had 2 peaks of moisture utilization. The 1st peak was at elongation stage and the 2nd with ear emergence and early grain formation, which affected grain filling. The crop extracted 142 mm of water in 1970-1 and 176 mm in 1971-2; about 83% of the water was extracted from the root zone, mostly from 0-30 cm depth. Soil moisture content decreased during 1970-1 and yield and water-use efficiency was less than in 1971-2 when moisture accumulated and N application was higher.
