Abstract
In pot trials in Nebraska sorghum cv. RS 610 and CK 60 was grown in cores of subsoil compacted to 1.00, 1.32, 1.62 or 1.78 g/cm3 and treated with 0, 1.4, 2.8 or 5.6 kg Fe/ha. Yields of tops and roots harvested at 7 weeks increased with increasing bulk density up to 1.32 g/cm3, then decreased. In general, the application of Fe did not significantly affect the DM yield of roots in the soil core but it did reduce the DM yields of tops.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:[317.4:131.3:222.672] Soil cores of Tripp subsoil were packed to give soil bulk densities between 1-1.78 g cm-3 and buried in quartz sand. Iron and other essential nutrients were added. Up to bulk densities of 1.32 g cm-3 dry weights of sorghum tops and roots increased. Iron did not significantly affect root weights but reduced top growth.
