Abstract
Short periods of cool nights (<13 deg C) at a critical stage in floral development appear to restrict nutrient supply to the developing pollen grains and this leads to male sterility. Chilling-tolerant germplasm has been found in material collected in north-eastern Africa and is being incorporated into acceptable agronomic types both in New Zealand and the USA.
