Abstract

2 Pennisetum americanum cv. were sown on 13 March, 2 April, 22 April or 12 May 1977. Single superphosphate at 30 kg P/ha and muriate of potash at 20 kg/ha were drilled as basal dressing the day before sowing. A total of 80 kg N/ha as urea was applied in 3 split doses, 30 kg/ha applied before sowing and 25 kg/ha applied after each of 2 cuts. The local cv. Ardi produced higher TDN yield (5.21 t/ha) and lower number of leaves/plant than the synthetic cv. UUJ (4.45 t). Sowing on 22 April produced the highest TDN yield (5.43 t) and number of leaves/plant in both cv. NFE, and CF contents and the nutritive ratio increased, while TDN, CP, ether extract, ash and P contents and the number of leaves/plant decreased in subsequent cuts
