Abstract
Studies were carried out in Egypt to estimate weight losses attributable to insects in grain stored under natural conditions. Samples of wheat, maize and sorghum were taken from warehouses in summer, and grains showing emergence holes were separated. The percentage weight losses, which were estimated by comparing the weight of the damaged grains with that of a similar number of undamaged ones, were 24.2-47.8 (average 32.64) in wheat, 16.2-27.9 (average 22.18) in maize and 26.3-46.9 (average 33.8) in sorghum. In the laboratory, newly harvested grains of several varieties of wheat, rice and barley were fumigated and then artificially infested with adults of Sitophilus granarius (L.), S. oryzae (L.) or Rhyzopertha dominica (F.). The adults were removed after two days, and the grains were kept (at 25 deg C and 70% RH.) for development of the progeny. The weight of grains showing emergency holes was then compared with that of sound grains. Weight losses attributable to the three species were about 38-40, 36-37 and 39.41, respectively, in wheat, 56-74, 65-84 and 66-81 in rice, and 79-81, 55-69 and 52-81 in barley
