Abstract
Pearl millet cv. Millex-23 was grown on Varina sandy loam soil where in the previous yr plots were chisel-cultivated to a depth of 38 cm or ploughed to 17 cm, with 4 water regimes and harvesting to allow either continuous growth or regrowth after cutting to a ht. of 20 cm in order to develop quantitative relationships between soil O2, matric potential and forage yield. Forage yield increased with increasing soil O2 content within the range 2-15%. At soil O2 levels >15%, growth was independent of O2 content. Within soil O2 range 0-15% with regrowth harvesting, yields from chiselled plots were greater than those from ploughed plots. Continuous growth produced increased yields for both tillage methods and within each water regime, compared with regrowth
