Abstract
An overview of current conservation systems is presented along with a general framework of principles and concepts that govern resource conservation work. The article surveys national and international genetic resource conservation programs, outlines the current state of conservation systems for plants, animals, and microorganisms, and calls for a global plan for conservation of biological diversity.
