Abstract

The results of trials in 1967-70 in the N. States of Nigeria to control witchweed (S. hermontheca) in cereals, especially in sorghum, are reviewed under the headings of control by breeding resistant cv., hand-pulling (the present recommended method), manures and herbicides. Grain yields of sorghum given no witchweed control, hand-pulled at intervals of 1 week and treated with the most effective of several herbicides applied to the soil at 4 weeks after sowing were 0.25, 0.68 and 0.96 t/ha, respectively. Application of 80 kg N/ha at 4 weeks after sowing increased grain yields from 0.63 t/ha in plots given no N to 1.09t; N significantly decreased witchweed DM production. Medinoterb acetate granules applied to the soil at 3.4 kg a.i./ha at 4 weeks after sowing decreased witchweed DM production and increased yields from 0.75 t/ha in plots given no witchweed control to 0.90 t, but 80 kg N/ha increased yield to 1.29 t and decreased witchweed DM production
