Abstract

The genetics of ovipositional non-preference and dead-heart formation governing shootfly [Atherigona] resistance in sorghum was investigated. Oviposition and dead-heart formation in single plants of 16 susceptible × resistant F2 progenies were recorded to examine the pattern of segregation of resistant genes. One single recessive gene governed the non-preference to oviposition while 2 duplicate recessive genes governed the resistance to dead-heart formation. The gene symbol, np0 was given for non-preference to oviposition where np0np0 governs non-preference and NP0NP0 or NP0np0 governs preference to oviposition. The resistance to dead-heart was symbolized by dh1dh1 dh2dh2. Susceptibility occurred when either of the genes DH1 or DH2 was in the homozygous or heterozygous condition
