Abstract
Amongst recently released, high yielding wheat varieties, Kalyan Sona, resistant to Puccinia graminis, P. striiformis, Ustilago nuda and Tilletia, is extensively cultivated in NW India, Sonalika (RR21, S308) is resistant to Puccinia with good-quality grain, PB18 is immune to Ustilago, and UP301 is resistant to P. graminis and P. striiforinis. Some resistance to Alternaria and Helminthosporium leaf blights is reported among new varieties. Tolerance to Xanthomonas oryzae is shown by the high yielding rice varieties IR20 and Pusa 2-21, and of over 10 000 lines screened, M-Sung-Song, BJ1, IR69/469, IR70/470, Taiwan 3, Lacross, Zenith and Nera are resistant. BJ1-2 is resistant to X. translucens f.sp. oryzicola and Latisail and Kadhairoh resistant to tungro virus. Resistance to Helminthosporium leaf blights in maize is reported for the hybrids Ganga 101, Ganga 5, Deccan and Ranjit, while resistance to Physoderma and Sclerospora is also reported for these hybrids and for the composites Kisan and Jawahar. Puccinia and mosaic resistance is shown by Ganga 101, Him123, Deccan, Ranjit and Kisan and Jawahar composites, while Ganga Safed 2 shows resistance to Pythium stalk rot. Breeding for disease resistance in Sorghum and Pennisetum typhoides is also discussed
