Abstract
In irrigated trials in 1968-70, bulrush millet cv. Tjolotjo Bearded and 15 sorghum-Sudan grass and Sudan grass hybrids were given 45-56 kg calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) + 56-78 kg single superphosphate + 34 kg muriate of potash/ha at sowing and were top-dressed with 56 kg CAN/ha after each cut (6 or 7). DM yields ranged from 16.3 to 22.3 t/ha in 1968-9 and from 10 to 16.6 t/ha in 1969-70. The highest yielding cv. also had the highest CP content, which ranged from 11.87 to 14.37% in 1968-9 and from 13.4 to 15.57% in 1969-70. The average period between cuts varied from 30 to 42 days in 1968-9 and from 28 to 32 days in 1969-70. Leaf percentage was 55-65%. The multiple-cut sorghum-Sudan grass and Sudan grass hybrids had no yield advantage over bulrush millet in single-season production, but produced DM yields of 3.9 to 6.1 t in the 2nd growing season, whereas bulrush millet did not survive the winter
