Abstract

The theory of the relationships between LAI, leaf angle distributions and light transmission through the leaf canopy is discussed with reference to field trials on sorghum and sunflowers in Australia. For sorghum, LAI was underestimated until it reached 0.9, while for sunflowers it was overestimated. This was thought to be due to gaps between rows in both crops and by heliotropism and the regularity of leaf insertion in sunflowers
