Abstract
In short-term experiments, cotton plants grown in competition with Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon), johnsongrass (S. halepense) or purple nutsedge (C. rotundus) for 10 weeks in large containers weighed only 15% of the weed-free controls if sown 3 weeks later than the weed species. Cotton sown before the weeds, however, was only slightly affected by competition. Highly significant negative correlations were found between growth parameters of cotton. Leachate from infested soil contained much less K and NO3 than that from the weed-free control and growth of mustard and cotton seedlings were depressed accordingly. Leachate from soil infested with C. rotundus or S. halepense had a strong inhibiting effect on both crop species while leachate from C. dactylon had a smaller effect on mustard only. The results suggest that the competitive effects of perennial weeds are due both to nutrient depletion and to biologically active substances.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:In a pot trial, seedlings of mustard (Brassica nigra) cv. Alsace and cotton cv. Acala 1517 were grown for 3 and 6 weeks, respectively, and watered with leachate from soil containing growing plants of (a) C. dactylon, (b) S. halepense or (c) C. rotundus. The weight of the above-ground parts of mustard were decreased 13, 39 and 53% by leachate from (a), (b) and (c), respectively, compared with controls watered with leachate from weed-free soil. The corresponding reductions for cotton were 0, 19 and 16%
