Abstract
Ten inbred lines were crossed as males to 3 male-sterile lines carrying the cytoplasms A1, A2 and A3. The 30 hybrids were scored for yield/ha and related characters at 3 Iowa sites in 1985. In comparison with the A1 cytoplasm, A2 and A3 delayed flowering and reduced the percentage of fertile pollen, number of grains/panicle and grain yield, but increased 100-grain weight. A1 did not differ from A2 and A3 for height, panicles/plant or leaf area. A2 and A3 cytoplasms did not differ for any traits. It is suggested that A2 and A3 might be suitable alternatives to A1 in hybrid sorghum production
