Abstract
The topmost fully expanded leaf of the hybrid BJ104 and its parents J104 (♂) and 5141A was analysed at weekly intervals for chlorophyll, Hill activity and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) activity. Up to 52 days of age, BJ104 contained considerably more chlorophyll than its parents, but its chlorophyll content declined thereafter, while that of J104 and 5141A reached a maximum at 66 and 73 days, respectively. Hill activity and PEPC activity were greater in J104 than in 5141A, and the hybrid was similar to J104. Multiple regression and correlation analysis showed that age and chlorophyll content limited the net assimilation rate in 5141A, but that only age limited productivity in BJ104
