Abstract
Severe infestation of sorghum (jowar) by Pyrilla perpusilla (Wlk.) was recorded for the first time at Sehore in the Indian State of Madhya Pradesh in 1960. Attack considerably reduced the test weight of grains (in samples with broken grains removed), and the feeding of the pest on the developing ears also affected the average weight of the ears and the weight of the total yield (all grains threshed from the ears and cleaned). Weekly or fortnightly applications of endrin and parathion sprays each at 0.01 and 0.02% and of DDT sprays at 0.1 and 0.2% all proved very effective in reducing pest populations. Fortnightly sprays of DDT at 0.1 and 0.2%, endrin at 0.01 and 0.02% and parathion at 0.02% and weekly sprays of endrin at 0.02% gave especially good results with regard to test grain weight, ear weight and total yield weight.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:In plot trials with sorghum, application of 0.01-0.2% endrin or parathion or 0.1-0.2% DDT solutions in 2 sprays at 14-day intervals or in 3 sprays at 7-day intervals was effective against P. perpusilla, gave grain yields of 3.96-5.21 kg/plot compared with 2.42 kg without insecticides, and increased panicle weight and 1000-grain weight
