Effect of magnetic seed treatment on agronomic characteristics of corn, soybeans and sorghum

Abstract

In field trials in 1970, passing seed of soyabean, sorghum or maize through a magnetic field (50 gauss) 14-35 days before sowing had no effect on maize or sorghum, but increased the moisture content, slightly decreased yields and increased plant stands (significantly) in soyabeans. In laboratory experiments, soyabeans cv. Cutler gave higher fresh weight and dry weight yields and grew taller from seed treated in a magnetic field than from untreated seed, but in cv. Calland there was no significant effect. In maize cv. Dekalb XL81 treated at a high moisture content (20%), fresh weight was reduced, but there was no effect at normal moisture content (8-10%), while in cv. Pioneer 3306 fresh weight was increased by treatment at normal moisture content and not affected at high moisture content. Maize gave greater fresh weight yields and sorghum gave higher germination when passed through the seed-treatment apparatus without the magnetic field being applied. No practical advantages of the magnetic treatments used could be demonstrated
